The basics about BREASTS:
STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT

Stage 1
– Childhood
Breasts are flat to chest with a
raised nipple and areola.

Stage 2 - Breast buds (Ages 9 -11)
A breast bump develops under
each nipple and some
tenderness may occur.

Stage 3 - Development Continues
(Ages 10 – 13)
Breasts get larger pointy. Adult in
shape but smaller.

Stage 4 - Nipple/Areola Mound
(Ages 12 – 14)
Some girls skip this stage and
some never develop past this
stage.  The breast is often cone
shaped.

Stage 5- Adult
Breasts are fully developed and
have a round, full shape.
Each breast consists of a mound
of fat tissue containing milk glands
and ducts.

The nipple is located in the center
of the breast (it may be raised or
slightly inverted).

The nipple is surrounded by the
areola (which may be any color
from pink to dark brown)
