Here's some info to help get you started.  You'll find more in our
Good Health Play Sheet that comes with our Kit.

Know this:   it's not only about your PHYSICAL being that will change
    - you need to understand what to expect emotionally as a result of
    puberty.

    Take a look below:
Good Health Kit
    The Good Health Kit
    comes with helpful
    info about your body
    and hygiene and
    provides a nice
    sports bag for you
    to carry your gear.
If you are a young teenage or pre-teen boy,  your body is going to
start changing and it's up to each of you to take care of yourself & to
know about good hygiene and personal care.

Because if you don't want to be babied by your folks, then you have
to learn about your body and how to best care for it.

You're becoming a young man and you seriously need to start
thinking about how you look, smell and feel if you want to stand out in
a crowd... but in a good way.
HAIR:   Take care of your hair and develop a routine to care for it.
Use a shampoo followed by a conditioner.  Young men of color
may have hair that is dry and delicate - protect it by shampooing
and conditioning less often and styling it gently with a wide-tooth
comb and use hair gels and conditioners.
Acne: Keep your face clean and your hands off.  Check out the Good
Health Play Sheet to learn more about acne.
Keep yourself clean - bathe everyday and after playing sports.
Puberty will cause you to have the greatest weight increase in your
entire life.  During puberty, you can grow 2" a year and usually add
9 - 11" to your height during this growth spurt which can last 3 - 4
years.  Although the body growth rate slows down after puberty, you
may continue to grow until the age of 19.
Hormones:   Are chemicals that play a role in almost all of the
changes that happen to you during puberty.  Hormones carry
messages to the reproductive organs of the body and tells it how
to grow.
Jock Itch:  Is a fungal infection of the outer layer of the skin, hair or
nails.  Using public showers and locker rooms increases the
chances of getting jock itch.
Symptoms include a rash in the groin, skin folds, inner-thighs or
buttocks but not on scrotum or penis.
Treatment includes washing infected area with warm water &
soap and applying anti-fungal cream.
Physical
Testosterone:  A hormone that starts in the Pituitary Gland and
travels through the blood to the Testicles, where it is produced
and causes the increase in facial and body hair and the growth in
the size of the penis.  Effects men throughout their adult years.
Anger: Testosterone brings feelings that are hard
to deal with.  Anger is a natural human emotion &
during puberty, the feelings become more intense
because of testosterone. Sometimes the smallest
setbacks can trigger a surge of anger.  You may
not be able to think clearly.

You have to lean to deal with anger and
remember to not use violence as it only makes
things worse.
Emotional
(yes, boys have emotions)
Anger:  How to Deal
  • talk to an adult
  • take a deep breath
  • think about what is bothering you
  • exercise
  • step back and out of the situation.
Stress:  Puberty is a time of change and change
is always stressful.  Here's some suggestion on
how to deal with it:
  • Get plenty of sleep.
  • Exercise regularly.  Exercise causes your
    body to release Endorphins (chemicals
that transmit info in your brain) which help
    you to feel better.
  • Try relaxing by envisioning a peaceful
    place.
  • Hang out with your pet.
  • Talk to a friend or parent.
  • Be as prepared as possible for any
    school assignment or activity.
