Because if you don't want to be babied by your folks, then you have to learn about your body and how to best care for it. You're becoming a young man and you seriously need to start thinking about how you look, smell and feel if you want to stand out in a crowd... but in a good way. |
| HAIR: Take care of your hair and develop a routine to care for it. Use a shampoo followed by a conditioner. Young men of color may have hair that is dry and delicate - protect it by shampooing and conditioning less often and styling it gently with a wide-tooth comb and use hair gels and conditioners. |

| Keep yourself clean - bathe everyday and after playing sports. |
| Puberty will cause you to have the greatest weight increase in your entire life. During puberty, you can grow 2" a year and usually add 9 - 11" to your height during this growth spurt which can last 3 - 4 years. Although the body growth rate slows down after puberty, you may continue to grow until the age of 19. |
| Hormones: Are chemicals that play a role in almost all of the changes that happen to you during puberty. Hormones carry messages to the reproductive organs of the body and tells it how to grow. |
| Jock Itch: Is a fungal infection of the outer layer of the skin, hair or nails. Using public showers and locker rooms increases the chances of getting jock itch. Symptoms include a rash in the groin, skin folds, inner-thighs or buttocks but not on scrotum or penis. Treatment includes washing infected area with warm water & soap and applying anti-fungal cream. |

| Anger: Testosterone brings feelings that are hard to deal with. Anger is a natural human emotion & during puberty, the feelings become more intense because of testosterone. Sometimes the smallest setbacks can trigger a surge of anger. You may not be able to think clearly. You have to lean to deal with anger and remember to not use violence as it only makes things worse. |
